in the beginning of the novel Gatsby was a mysterious and untouchable character yet as we progress on he becomes a more tangible and flawed person. in the start very little is known of Gatsby and we don’t even meet our Protagonist for the first few chapters. He is seen as this “larger than life” character by most of the townspeople. when we finally do meet Gatsby he is a lot more “ordinary” than we expect and it seems his reputation is mainly brought about through his wealth and mystery rather than fact. As the novel progresses and Nick becomes friends with Gatsby he becomes seen as this typical man who only wants to be with the woman as his dreams. this is especially notable when daisy is finally invited to lunch with Mr. Gatsby. At this meal Gatsby changes from a normally confident and boisterous host to shy and awkward. much later and towards the end of the book we begin to see Gatsby’s flaws and the possibly unhealthy obsession with daisy as he refuses to give up on a dream that will never come true. we also come to see how he may have used Nick as a way to get closer to Daisy often deceiving him to do so.
daisy
when we first meet daisy she is innocent and kind if a little negligent toward her daughter. she seems very friendly and is a caring person. as nick gets to know daisy she seems spoilt and acts cold towards most people excluding Gatsby. it becomes evident that she cares more for Gatsby’s money then for him. this is first seen when daisy begins crying at the sight of Gatsby’s wealth as she realises the wealth she could have had if she had chosen Gatsby over Tom. a little while later she seems desperate to get away from tom and be rejoined with Gatsby and more importantly the rich lifestyle he lives. she is cold with Tom. although they do not talk about it both tom and her are both aware she is trying to escape
nick
nick does not change through the great Gatsby novel throughout the book he remains ignorant to the ways of the rich. nick always views the rich as flawless and above him and he aspires to be like them. no matter what he learns or sees his opinions rarely change. even towards the end of the novel after all he has seen he is still surprised when Daisy does not come to Gatsby’s funeral or at least send flowers not realising that she cared only for Gatsby’s money. he instead makes up excuses and defends her.
illusion
Gatsby has created an illusion of a perfect man who’s wealth has fufilled his every need. however even with his immense wealth he still feels unsatisfied with his life
